The KwaZulu-Natal Society for the Blind was formed in 1919 and is situated near the city center in Durban.  For 90 years the Society has offered rehabilitation services to blind and partially sighted children and adults in KwaZulu-Natal.  The Society has evolved into a dynamic, multifaceted organization with its focus today on improving rehabilitation, education, habilitation and employment opportunities for the blind community we serve.

INCOME GENERATING ACTIVITIES…

A Small Business Department, which trains people to become independent basket manufacturers
A Packaging and Assembly Department, which offers its services to companies outsourcing part of their operations

SERVICES TO THE COMMUNITY…

  • A Resource Centre which offers social work counseling, low vision assessments, training in independence, life skills, orientation and mobility, computer and telephony
  • A Development Centre for visually impaired pre-school children
  • A Residential Educational Centre for rural, visually impaired youngsters
  • A Residence, which accommodates visually impaired adults
  • Outreach life skills and blindness prevention programs

The KZN Society for the Blind strives for self-sufficiency through its manufacturing, trading and fundraising activities while maintaining its mission to improve the quality of life of visually impaired people throughout KwaZulu-Natal. Approximately 2000 visually impaired people and their families are assisted annually
